If you want to be really close to Disney property, you've got two
choices: Kissimmee
and Lake
Buena Vista.
Kissimmee (no, it's pronounced kis-SIM-me) includes the Maingate
East and Maingate West areas, so named for their proximity to Disney
entrances. Family-friendly motels, many of them in the budget category,
are lined up shoulder to shoulder along U.S. 192, the main drag.
Lake Buena Vista includes Best Western Lake Buena Vista Resort and
Hotel Plaza, a lodging- and tree-lined boulevard that leads to Downtown
Disney, a shopping/dining/entertainment complex. This is the high-rent
district. Even the budget hotels here cost more than their counterparts
in other parts of town.
At Universal
Studios Escape, the posh, Mediterranean-themed Portofino opened
in September 1999. It is the first of five planned on-site hotels.
Several chain hotels in a range of prices are nearby.
An image of
Shamu dominates the lobby of the Renaissance, which is just across
the parking lot from Sea World.
